None of this is very new. The big difference here is that the speech was made in Egypt. The even bigger difference is that this is the first President to even pretend he means it when he chastizes the Israelis. The reaction, of course, has been mixed. What I find really insulting and particularly tasteless is to see garbage like is reported here. Alleging the President is in league with Israel’s enemies, because he condemns their continued violation of international statute even after being asked to desist is irresponsible at best. You are not antisemitic or a “Jew hater” if you believe that Israel should be a lawful nation. Especially at a time when Israel’s legitimacy is constantly in question, Israelis might do well to remember that one of the main reasons Israel is endowed with the military might to defend itself is because of American support through the years.
